The HBCU Doctoral Career Pathways Conference
In its second year, the HBCU Doctoral Career Pathways Conference offers graduate students from across the HBCU enterprise access to diverse career pathways.
This week-long virtual program exposes doctoral and master’s students to 15 different pathways. This year’s conference included nonprofit, federal government, policy, academic, communications, international affairs, STEM and social science research, health, data science/cybersecurity, biotech/pharma, postdoc, education, start-up/entrepreneurial, and consulting career panels.
Overall, 75 panelists comprised mostly of Howard doctoral alumni provided invaluable insights and wisdom as to how to transition from graduate school to professional life in a variety of settings.
This year Dr. Landy Watley also spearheaded a networking session in the evening. Nicole Johnson continued to offer resume/CV review and other training through the Career Center.
Attendance continued to surpass last year’s conference with a combined 497 attendees for all sessions. In terms of institutional representation, there were 67 different universities and organizations.
In the words of Sociology doc student and first-time attendee, Carlos Chapman II, “Every session was very informative and helped me to learn from shared experiences as well as understand future opportunities. Panelists were answering our questions and open to connecting and networking.”
