The Howard University community is mourning the loss of Dr. Jimisha Iman Relerford, a brilliant scholar, dedicated educator, and multi-talented administrator who passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Virginia Hospital Center.

The Graduate School and its Dean Dana A. Williams, PhD announced her passing with tremendous sadness, honoring a woman whose impactful career came full circle at her alma mater. In profound recognition of her trailblazing scholarly achievements and indelible contributions to the field of English, the Graduate School held a hood and degree presentation in her honor before announcing her as the first student to receive the Doctor of Philosophy degree on May 10, 2026. Just as she lived her life, Dr. Relerford was surrounded by a loving circle of family and friends in her final moments.

A Brilliant Legacy Posthumously Recognized

Dr. Relerford’s academic journey culminated with the successful defense of her dissertation, titled “Sista Satirists: Black Women Writing Humor and Satire across Cultures,” on December 3, 2025.

Dr. Relerford’s deep roots at Howard University began during her undergraduate years, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Classics. She went on to earn a Master of Arts in English with a concentration in Rhetoric and Composition from Georgia State University before returning home to Howard to serve as both a first-year writing instructor and a doctoral student in the Department of English.

Her specialized research beautifully bridged the gaps between contemporary African diaspora literatures, African American and Africana rhetorics, archival studies, and Black women’s writing, humor, and satire. Her sharp, insightful scholarship has been published in esteemed journals, including the CLA Journal, the Langston Hughes Review, and Spectrum: A Journal on Black Men. Throughout her rising career, she earned several prestigious accolades, including the Scholars for the Dream Award from the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the Cindy and Dicky Selfe Fellowship, and the Just-Julian Graduate Research Assistantship at Howard University.

A Pillar of Leadership and Mentorship

For nearly a decade, Dr. Relerford taught first-year composition and writing courses with a trademark blend of exceptional rigor and deep care. Her pedagogical excellence earned her the esteemed rank of Master Instructor in the Department of English.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Relerford was a dynamic administrative force across the university. She selflessly balanced numerous leadership roles, serving as the Project Manager for the NOAA Cooperative Science Center in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology, the coordinator for the Graduate School’s Expository Writing Program, the Special Assistant to the Graduate Dean, and the Assistant Director of the Writing Center in the Department of English.

Dr. Relerford’s intellectual contributions, unwavering commitment to her students, and profound service to the university community leave a lasting legacy. She will be deeply missed by colleagues, students, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
