Kakra Hughes is a tenured Associate Professor of Surgery at the Howard University College of Medicine and Director of Endovascular Surgery at Howard University Hospital. He also serves as Director of Outpatient Services for the Department of Surgery. 

He is the author of over 80 journal articles, book chapters and abstracts, and is frequently invited as a speaker at medical and surgical meetings – regional, national and international.  Dr. Hughes serves as an editorial board member for several journals including Journal of Endovascular Therapy and Annals of Vascular Surgery.  In addition to this, he is also a frequent reviewer for many of the major vascular journals including Circulation, Stroke, Journal of Vascular Surgery, and Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.  He is an active member of multiple surgical/medical societies including the Society for Vascular Surgery, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society, Eastern Vascular Society, Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, Chesapeake Vascular Society, Edward B. Diethrich Vascular Surgical Society, Association for Academic Surgery, American College of Surgeons, Society of Black Academic Surgeons, LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr. Surgical Society, Southeastern Surgical Congress, National Medical Association and the Christian Medical and Dental Associations.  

His clinical interests include open and endovascular management of carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease, aneurysmal disease and vascular trauma.  His research interests center on surgical health services and outcomes research with a focus on vascular disease and health disparities.

Dr. Hughes obtained a BS (Summa Cum Laude) from Central State University and an MD from Wake Forest School of Medicine.  His surgical residency was completed at Los Angeles County’s Martin Luther King, Jr./Drew-UCLA Program followed by a Vascular/Endovascular Surgery residency at Harvard Medical School’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.  He also completed a Cardiovascular Surgery Research fellowship at UCLA and an Endovascular Surgery fellowship at the Arizona Heart Institute.
