All new entrants to Howard University are required to pay a ONE-TIME ENROLLMENT FEE of $300.00. You are not an official student of Howard University until you pay this enrollment fee. By paying this fee you will be accepting your admittance to Howard University Graduate School. This is an out of pocket student expense that should be paid as soon as you receive your acceptance letter. Student loans or any other financial award money cannot be applied to pay this fee. This fee is paid to the Graduate School’s Admission Office and will have to be paid before can receive your PERMIT TO REGISTER. This fee is required for all students, however if you have attended Howard University in the past, you have already paid this fee and will not have to pay it again.
Howard University’s financial aid is broken into two categories: need-based and merit-based financial support.

Immediately!!! Once you have been admitted to the graduate school your department will be your main resource for information about your course of study (i.e., advising, registration, financial aid). As a new graduate student, you will need to set up an appointment to meet with your director of graduate studies who will act as your advisor to assist you in selecting courses for first time registration. The director of graduate of studies will also be the person who will provide you with recommendations for advisors within the department.

Off-Campus Housing Referral Service
Howard University’s Off-Campus Housing Service contains monthly listings of available Off Campus Properties throughout the Washington, D.C. Metro area. Howard University nor the Office of Residence Life is responsible for any problems or circumstances that may arise when renting properties located in the referral listing. We do not screen the property or landlord; therefore, it is your responsibility to inquire accordingly.

Student should begin planning their move to Washington DC as soon as possible, but at least 60 days prior to arrival. It will take you about a month to find and secure appropriate housing. That is the biggest hurdle which most students face when coming to DC. You will also need time to arrange for all your utilities, bank accounts, insurance and other necessities. This is best done PRIOR to beginning classes.

D.C.'s springs (April to May) and falls (September to October) are generally mild. Summer can be very hot and humid, especially in July and August. Winters can be severe with temperatures around freezing and snow storms occasionally shutting down the city, especially in January.
