An amazing team of Howard University doctoral students Jamela J., Tribuana Jones and Old Dominion University's Leah Valdes presented findings recently in in Norfolk, Virginia — a powerful, collaborative project with Cheryl Poe of Advocating 4Kids and Dr. Kathryn Wiley of Howard University’s School of Education. This joint effort has spanned two years in the making and is pushing Virginia’s education system to do better for Black students with disabilities and their families. Through this work, the team is challenging inequities, and reimagining what accountability and equity can look like in the special education space. Joseph and Jones are 4th and 3rd year doctoral students in Howard’s Educational Leadership and Policy Studies program and soon to be doctoral candidates.

New Publication Alert

Howard alum Dr. Tamanika Ferguson recently published “In the Belly of the Beast: Feminist Lessons in the Politics and Practice of Abolition Feminism, Resistance, and Freedom." This article in Feminist Criminology argues that testimony is theory and resistance and centers inside-outside authored writing and coalition work to show how incarcerated women and advocates organize for decarceration, dignified care, and community-based safety—and offers a power-shift test for “reform.”
