Dean's Corner

This spring has been full of activities that enliven graduate studies at Howard. In March, for example, we held our annual candidacy ceremony. Congratulations to those who achieved this milestone! A few weeks ago, we had our second doctoral careers pathways conference with wonderful alumni and friends helping our scholars understand the full range of career options available to them. I can't say enough good things about this addition to our annual calendar. We're so proud of our alumni and their commitment to engaging current students. Recently, ten of our scholars were inducted into the Edward A. Bouchet Honor Society, and we were well represented during oral and poster presentations sessions at this year's Bouchet Conference at Yale. Kudos to these scholars and their mentors.

Earlier this week, we held an orientation session for our newly established Board of Visitors. Trustee Tyra Mariani, who chairs the Graduate School's Board of Visitors, and Dr. Anthony Wutoh, Provost and Chief Academic Officer, shared with the board members what we hope to achieve together. We are fortunate to be supported by Lakia Young from the Office of the Secretary. Stay tuned to learn more about our board members and our agenda for AY 23-24. There is great work ahead, indeed, to help make ours a best-in-class Graduate School.

I get excited every time one of the associate or assistant deans shares the news that one of our scholars has had a successful thesis or dissertation defense. That's an email that never gets old. We're on track to have another wonderful year of graduates across fields of study, graduates who will positively impact the world. Commencement season is upon us, and I can't wait to share with you some of the stories of our graduates. In the meantime, I invite you to enjoy the renewal of spring.
