Howard's School2Lab program, a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-sponsored summer fellowship, opens doors for high school students in the DMV who are passionate about STEMM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Health. Launched in 2024 by the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the initiative is part of the Howard University-Johns Hopkins University Comprehensive Alliance in Cancer Research Education and Equity, led by Dr. Carla Williams, Associate Professor of Medicine and Public Health. Other Howard participants include Dr. Rao Khan, Dr. Quinton Williams, Dr. Misra Prabhakar, Dr. Kofi Deh, Iman Stephenson, Britnee Marius, and Michelle Wills.

Developed in collaboration with the successful Summer Academic Research Experience (SARE), School2Lab aims to broaden students’ understanding of science, spark curiosity, and prepare them for future careers in STEMM. The program was founded by Khan, Medical Physics Director, in collaboration with Dr. Heng Li and Dr. Clayton Yates. Each year, students are recruited through relationships with local schools.

This past summer, five exceptional students—Aniah Garcia-Charway, Arsema Girma, Destiney Johnson, Sophia Le, and Iremofe Seun-Olufemi—participated in hands-on cancer research and college readiness training. Feedback from scholars highlighted the program’s impact, describing it as “fun” and “transformative.” Graduate student mentors also played a key role in guiding participants through their research journey.

"In my view, last summer’s achievement was witnessing the scholars transition from curious and attentive, to engaged and contributing members of a research team. Their individual growth and impartation of scientific discoveries to their community was what I found to be the most successful aspect of the program. Though it is only fall, I am looking forward to another impactful 2026 program," reflects Program Director Wills.

Looking ahead, School2Lab plans to expand outreach to under-resourced schools and continue fostering opportunities for motivated students in the region. With its strong foundation and collaborative spirit, the program is poised to make an even greater impact in the coming years.
