Spring is in the air!

For this month's Dean's Corner, it gives me great pleasure to celebrate a few of our students whose degrees will be conferred at commencement this year. The four scholars highlighted below are evidence of the range of research emanating from the Graduate School.

Rhema White will earn the Ph.D. in Communication, Culture, and Media Studies. A scholar in the Media and Culture Studies track, Rhema maintained a 4.0 GPA in the program. Her dissertation title “Taking Over for the ‘99 and the 2000s”: A Comparative Textual Analysis of Black Reboots, Remakes, and Re-imaginings, Black Twitter, and 1990s/2000s Afro-Nostalgia.

Brandy Jackson will earn the Ph.D. in Higher Education, Leadership, and Policy Studies. Ms. Jackson is a returning student who is no stranger to Howard. She is an assistant dean for enrollment in the School of Education and a tireless advocate for students.

Dongchiao Liu is a graduate student in the Department of Microbiology, who successfully defended his dissertation on April 4, 2024.Three papers from his dissertation have already been accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Dongchiao was also a Just-Julian fellow.

Felipe Juan will earn his Ph.D. in Economics this semester. He has been the Graduate Economics Student Association president for two years. He has also served on the Graduate Student Council as an officer. A Russel Sage Dissertation Fellow, Felipe worked the past 3 years with the American Economic Association summer program mentoring students. His dissertation research focused on the economics of unemployment insurance.

The future looks bright with these scholars joining the guild. I look forward to celebrating them and so many others this graduation season.

Cordially,
