Presidential Management Fellows

For graduate students looking to kickstart a career in the Federal Government, there is a program to support these ambitions. The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program – the Federal Government’s premier leadership development program – is for advanced degree holders across a variety of academic disciplines.

The PMF Program is a full-time, two-year fellowship at a Federal agency with full salary and benefits, training and development opportunities, and a senior-level mentor. Placed across more than 100 Federal agencies, fellows have access to a vast network of PMFs and PMF Alumni – a community that is now over 10,000 strong.

“I chose to complete my fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and it was one of the most impactful developmental experiences in my career. I appreciated the investment of my agency into my growth and was afforded the opportunity to rotate throughout various offices to work in an array of administrative capacities. This helped me gain a better understanding for how offices work together to achieve the mission of the NIH. Although there are other paths into federal service, the PMF Program sets itself apart with its emphasis on cultivating talent from a multitude of backgrounds and preparing Fellows for leadership roles in government. My time in the PMF Program also included a mentor and many opportunities to interact with senior leaders at my agency. I am better prepared to take on leadership assignments and pursue new growth opportunities,” says Celena Snoddy, Class of 2019 PMF MPA.

A Bethune Cookman University Alum, Dr. Patrice Gregory’s (Class of 2022 PMF) background is in Education. Before becoming a Presidential Management Fellow, she taught Special Education in public schools.

After completing her doctorate, she was looking for more opportunities to grow and impact change on another level. She took an interest in PMF because it was an opportunity to gain experience and on-the-job training, while being paid.

“After the selection process, as I prepared to find an appointment, I was overwhelmed thinking the only positions I would be a fit for would be those related to teaching. I was wrong. There were so many opportunities in agencies and departments I never would have dreamed I had the credentials to work for. I decided to go with the Department of Housing and Urban Development. I have grown so much since beginning my journey in the fellowship. The department I work in does interagency work with the Department of Education allowing me to share my expertise in that field to build a stronger relationship between the two agencies. I received stellar on-the-job training and had the pleasure of participating in so many other training events. The networking opportunities also allowed me to meet other PMFs and their colleagues,” says Gregory.

The PMF application opens for two weeks in the fall. To stay informed of the application deadline and others news graduate students should read more here.
