Madison Wells, PhD Student, Sociology and Criminology was chosen for the Health Policy Research Scholars Program, one of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s leadership initiatives.
Arsene Frederic, Jr, PhD student, HELPS was selected as a 2024 Bryce Harlow Fellowship recipient. It is awarded to highly motivated students in pursuit of a career in professional advocacy through government relations and lobbying.
Dr. Omari Swinton and the Department of Economics received grant renewal from the Sloan Foundation to to strengthen its economics department and bolster its research capacity. Howard is the only Historically Black College or University with an economics doctoral program and one of just 20 granting both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics. Grant funds will be used to increase Howard’s capacity to recruit, educate, and graduate students through providing tuition support for 8 doctoral students and research stipend support for 1 postdoctoral scholar, 5 undergraduates, and 5 graduate students.
Kweli Zukeri, PhD Alumni, a member of the Howard family for almost 15 years, was promoted to Assistant Vice President of Web Innovation & Strategy.
Dr. Brandale Mills Cox, PhD Alumni, was recognized as a Growth in Equity as a Measure of Sustainability (GEMS) honoree by the Diversity Action Alliance for distinguished communicators of color.
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders
- Dr. Andi Toliver-Smith and COSD doctoral students, Marlon John, Morgan Moore, and Nailah Smith presented at the Cultural Humility Conference held by the National Black Association of Speech, Language, and Hearing.
- Assistant Professor, Dr. Miguelina Zapata and two master's students, Amanda Melendez and Danaize Sanchez spent the summer in the Dominican Republic providing language evaluations to over 300 children with communication disorders.
- Dr. Miguelina Zapata served as a panelist for the ASHA Townhall for School-based SLPs in a session titled, "Workload Management Strategies: Implementing Service Delivery Models in Schools". August 28, 2024.
- Dr. Andi Toliver-Smith has a presentation at the 2024 ASHA Convention in December titled, "Experiences of Deaf Hearing Aid Users in US Audiology Clinics". This presentation has been designated as an ASHA Convention Visionary Session. Visionary sessions are characterized by their ability to foresee and address future challenges, shape industry practices, and lead transformative initiatives.
- Master's student, Aethiopia Salmon-Joseph is a recipient of the Student's Preparing for Research and Academic Careers (SPARC) Award with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). This $1000 award requires Aethiopia to engage in mentored teaching and research activities that will prepare her for a career in academia. Her teaching and research mentor is Dr. Alaina Davis.
- Master's student, Nastassia Horn is one of twelve Student Fellows with the Academy of Neurologic Communications Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS). Nastassia will be provided with an ANCDS mentor for one-year, free registration to the 2024 ANCDS Scientific Meeting in November, and one-year free membership. (Attachment:
